The Punctuated Equilibrium Model

An Alternative Model: For Temporary Groups with Deadlines-

  • Temporary groups with deadlines don’t seem to follow the five stage model
  • They have their own sequence of action: The Punctuated Equilibrium Model

The Punctuated Equilibrium Model:

  • their first meeting sets the group’s direction
  • First phase of group activity is one of inertia(inaction, disinterest)
  • A transition takes place at the end of the first phase, which occurs exactly when the group has used up half its allocated time.
  • A transition initiates major changes.
  • A second phase of inertia follows the transition; and
  • The group’s last meeting is characterized by markedly accelerated activity.
Temporary group go through transition between inertia and activity.
