Orientation Or Induction

Orientation and Placement
Ø  Orientation is a systematic and planned introduction of employees to their jobs, their coworkers and the organization.
Ø  It is also called as induction.
Ø  Orientation conveys  three types of information:
o   General information about the daily work routine.
o   A review of the organization’s history, founding fathers, objectives, operations or services, as well as how the employees contributes to the organization.
o   A detailed presentation, perhaps in a brochure, of the organization, work rules, and employees’ benefits.
Purpose of Orientation:
Ø  Make the new employees feel “At home” in the new environment
Ø  Employees feel anxious on entering an organization.
Ø  Providing information on the job environment and supervisors, by introducing them to coworkers.
Ø  Expectation from new personnel.
Four types of orientation program:
1.       Formal – Informal
2.       Individual – collective
3.       Serial –disjunctive
4.       Investiture – divestiture

1.  Formal-Informal:
Ø  Informal orientation: new hire are directly put on the job an they are expected to accept / adopt themselves with the work and organization.
Ø  Formal Orientation: the management has a structured program which is executed when new hire/ employee join the organization.
2. Individual –Collective:
Ø  Individual: new hire should be inducted individually.
o   Orienting each person separately is an expensive and time consuming process.
o   No opportunity to share anxiety with fellow appointees.
Ø  Collective: Large organization use collective approach.
o   Small firms: Individual approach.
3. Serial- disjunctive:
Ø  Serial: When an experienced employee inducts a new hire. The experienced employee acts as a tutor and model for the new hire.
Ø  Disjunctive: when new hire do not have predecessors (former office holder) to guide them or to model their behavior upon.
o   More creative , no burden of tradition
4. Investiture – divestiture:
Ø  Investiture: Investiture orientation seeks to ratify (accept, confirm) the usefulness of the characteristics that the person brings to new job.
o   Most high-level appointments follow this approach.
Ø  Divestiture Orientation: Seeks to make minor modification in the characteristics of the new hire, though, he or she was selected based on his or her potential for performance.
o   Dismantle old mind set of new member.

Formal Orientation Program:

Placement:
Ø  Refers to the allocation of people to Job.
